The Analgesic Effects of Numerous Interventions for Primary Dysmenorrhea: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract
Objective: Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a chronic condition that predominantly affects young women, interfering with daily activities and leading to reduced work productivity and quality of life. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a complementary and alternative therapy used to alleviate PD‑related pain. The aim of this meta‑analysis was to evaluate the efficacy of TENS in managing pain in women with PD.
Methods: English-language literature was retrieved from the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (EBSCO), the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), CINAHL (EBSCO), PUBMED, OVID, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and the Academic Search Complete database. Search terms included “primary dysmenorrhea,” “pain,” “transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation,” “TENS,” and “electrical stimulation.” All records from the inception of each database through <> month 2020 were included in the search.
Results: The initial search strategy, based on the date range and language, yielded 571 relevant records, of which 4 were related to TENS and PD. A total of 260 patients participated in the included studies. In all included studies, the comparison intervention was sham TENS. The primary outcome of interest was pain intensity. Our analysis indicated that TENS was more effective than sham TENS in reducing PD‑related pain (SMD = 1.384; 95% CI = 0.505, 2.262; p = 0.002).
Conclusion: TENS is a safe and well-tolerated electrotherapy that can effectively alleviate pain in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
